Like many cities in UP, Prayagraj has a community of Zardozi artisans. This Persian style of embroidery involves sewing gold and silver threads onto fabric (usually silk or velvet) along with beads and sequins.
It is labor-intensive work. In Prayagraj, it is often used to make heavy bridal lehengas and decorative wall hangings depicting Islamic calligraphy or Hindu deities.
