
While Varanasi and Gwalior are famous for music, Gaya has its own distinct tradition known as the Gaya Gharana. Pandit Balram Pathak was a shining star of this lineage. He was a master of the Sitar and the Surbahar (a bass sitar).
His style was heavily influenced by the Dhrupad genre—serious, deep, and devoid of gimmicks. He was known for his 'Meend' work (gliding notes). Despite being less commercialized than other artists, he was deeply respected by connoisseurs for preserving the purity of the Raga.
