The Great Buddha Statue is an imposing 80-foot (25-meter) high figure of the Buddha seated in a meditation pose on a lotus. Unveiled in 1989 by the Dalai Lama, it was the first modern colossus built in the town, symbolizing the global revival of Buddhism.
Constructed of sandstone and red granite blocks, the statue is hollow and contains a spiral staircase inside (though usually closed to the public). It is designed in a Japanese style, reflecting the aesthetic of the Daijokyo Buddhist sect which commissioned it.
Surrounded by a garden, it is a peaceful place for walking. The sheer scale of the statue against the open sky makes it awe-inspiring.
