Glass Beads

Beadwork

Varanasi possesses a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its glass beads. It is the world's largest production center for handmade glass beads, a craft that has existed here for centuries. The artisans melt glass rods and wind the molten glass around a mandrel to create beads of various shapes and colors.

This industry is largely cottage-based. The beads are used to make fashion jewelry, curtains, and decorative items which are exported globally. The 'lampworking' technique used here requires immense skill and patience to ensure the beads are uniform and durable.

Visitors can buy affordable and colorful beaded jewelry in the local markets, particularly near the Vishwanath temple lane.
