Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Iconic

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is not just a place of worship; it is the spiritual fulcrum of Varanasi and one of the most revered sites in Hinduism. Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vishwanath (Lord of the Universe), it houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, considered the most potent manifestations of Shiva. A visit to Kashi is considered incomplete without a 'Darshan' of the Lingam here. The current structure was built in 1780 by the Maratha Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore after the previous temple was destroyed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

The temple is famously known as the 'Golden Temple' of Varanasi because of the 800 kilograms of gold plating on its two domes and spires, donated by the Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839. The complex has recently undergone a massive transformation with the creation of the 'Kashi Vishwanath Corridor,' which connects the temple directly to the Ganges river at Lalita Ghat, restoring the ancient tradition of taking a dip in the river and walking directly to the temple offering water.

Inside, the atmosphere is electric. Thousands of devotees queue for hours, chanting "Har Har Mahadev." The security is tight, and no electronic devices are allowed inside. The experience of entering the Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum) and touching the Lingam is described by believers as a powerful, vibrating transfer of energy. The temple town surrounding it is a maze of narrow lanes selling flowers, sweets, and rudraksha beads.

Beyond the main shrine, the complex houses smaller temples for Kaal Bhairav, Vishnu, and Vinayaka. The daily routine of the temple includes five elaborate Aartis, with the Mangala Aarti (3 AM) and Shringar Aarti (evening) being the most sought-after experiences. It is a place where the grandeur of history meets the raw intensity of faith.

Visitors should be prepared for long lines and strict security checks. Foreigners can purchase a 'Sugam Darshan' ticket for a faster entry. The best time to visit is early morning or late night to avoid the peak crowds.
