In Ayodhya, music is worship. Baba Manas Das was a revered saint and musician who perfected the art of singing the Ramcharitmanas. Unlike classical concert music, his style was 'Samaj Gayan'—community singing intended for the deity.
He spent his life in the temples of Ayodhya, teaching disciples how to intone the verses of Tulsidas with the correct meter and emotion (Bhaav). His contribution preserved the oral tradition of the Ramayana in the city.
His lineage continues in the ashrams where the epic is chanted 24/7 (Akhand Ramayan Path).
