Ram Ki Paidi

Must-See

Ram Ki Paidi is not a single ghat but a series of bathing ghats on the banks of the Saryu River, which has recently become the poster child of modern Ayodhya. Originally built during the 1980s to handle the overflow of pilgrims from the main river, it suffered from neglect for years. However, a massive renovation project has turned it into a stunning riverfront promenade lined with parks, sandstone gazebos, and continuous flow of clean water pumped from the main river.

The location is globally famous for the 'Deepotsav' festival held every Diwali. Millions of earthen lamps (diyas) are lit simultaneously on these steps, illuminating the night sky and creating a reflection in the water that looks like a river of fire. This spectacle has repeatedly entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest display of oil lamps, drawing tourists from around the world.

By day, Ram Ki Paidi is a place of leisure and ritual. Pilgrims take holy dips in the channel, believing the water washes away sins. Young locals and tourists use the landscaped gardens for evening walks. The backdrop of temples and the open sky makes it the most photogenic spot in the city.

In the evening, a laser and sound show projects the story of the Ramayana onto the water screens and the facades of the temples lining the ghat. It is a perfect blend of ancient storytelling and modern technology.

It acts as the social heart of Ayodhya, bridging the gap between the devout pilgrim and the modern tourist.
