Ram Janmabhoomi Temple

Iconic

The Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir is the spiritual crown jewel of Ayodhya, standing on the site believed for millennia to be the exact birthplace of Lord Rama. Following a centuries-long legal and social struggle, the Supreme Court of India paved the way for its construction in 2019, and the Pran Pratishtha (consecration) of the deity was performed in January 2024.

Architecturally, the temple is a masterpiece of the 'Gurjara-Nagara' style. It is built without the use of steel or iron to ensure longevity, relying instead on interlocking pink sandstone from Bansi Paharpur in Rajasthan. The temple stands on a high platform, featuring 392 pillars and 44 doors. Each pillar is intricately carved with figures of deities and celestial dancers. The main shikhara (spire) rises 161 feet into the sky.

The sanctum sanctorum (Garbha Griha) houses the idol of 'Ram Lalla' (the infant Rama), sculpted from dark Krishna Shila stone by artist Arun Yogiraj. The idol captures the innocence of a child with the divinity of an avatar. A unique scientific feature is the 'Surya Tilak' mechanism, designed to direct sunlight onto the forehead of the idol precisely at noon on Ram Navami every year.

The complex is huge, designed to handle hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. It includes museums, educational centers, and pilgrim facilities. A visit here is not just religious; it is an observation of a major moment in contemporary Indian history.

Security is extremely tight. Mobile phones and electronics are strictly prohibited inside, so they must be deposited in lockers outside. The queue for Darshan can take hours, so patience is required.
