Akhtari Bai Faizabadi, universally known as Begum Akhtar, is one of the greatest icons of Indian classical music. Born in Faizabad (Ayodhya's twin city), she mastered the semi-classical forms of Thumri, Dadra, and Ghazal.
Her music was deeply influenced by the cultural milieu of Faizabad and Lucknow. She brought the poetry of Ghalib, Mir, and Faiz to the masses with a voice that was melancholic, textured, and uniquely expressive. She is credited with making the Ghazal a respectable genre for concert stages.
Her childhood home remains in Faizabad, and her legacy is celebrated by music lovers worldwide who still regard her renditions as the gold standard of emotional expression.
