Khadau are traditional wooden slippers consisting of a sole with a knob that fits between the big and second toe. They are famously associated with Lord Rama's brother, Bharat, who placed Rama's Khadau on the throne and ruled as a regent for 14 years.
Ayodhya is the hub for Khadau making. Artisans use light, durable wood to carve these sandals. While traditionally worn by saints and ascetics, they are now gaining popularity as 'acupressure footwear' for health enthusiasts.
They make for a deeply symbolic souvenir, representing humility and duty. You can find them in plain wood or inlaid with brass wire.
