Malini Awasthi is the contemporary face of folk music in Uttar Pradesh. A disciple of Girija Devi, she has worked tirelessly to preserve and popularize the folk traditions of the Awadh region, specifically the songs sung during weddings (Vivah Geet), childbirth (Sohar), and the monsoons (Kajri).
She is a regular performer at the Ayodhya Deepotsav and other cultural festivals. Her powerful, earthy voice connects the modern audience with the village roots of the region. She has been instrumental in documenting songs that were on the verge of being forgotten.
Her performances often explain the cultural context of the lyrics, making the dialect accessible to non-Hindi speakers.
