The Nageshwarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and stands at Ram Ki Paidi. Tradition holds that this temple was established by Kush, the son of Lord Rama. The legend goes that Kush lost his armlet while bathing in the Saryu. It was found by a Nag-Kanya (Snake Princess) who fell in love with him. As she was a devotee of Shiva, Kush built this temple for her.
It is considered one of the few structures in Ayodhya that survived the ravages of time and invasions before the modern era (though the current structure is from the 18th century, built by Safdar Jung's minister). It is the focal point of the massive Shivratri festival, where thousands of devotees form a procession (Baraat) of Lord Shiva.
The inner sanctum houses a powerful Shiva Lingam. It serves as a reminder that Ayodhya, while a Vaishnavite center, has always held a deep reverence for Shiva.
