As a Vaishnavite city, the Tulsi plant (Holy Basil) is revered in Ayodhya. The stems of the plant are carved into beads to make 'Malas' (rosaries). Wearing Tulsi beads around the neck (Kanthi) is considered essential for devotees of Vishnu/Rama, believed to protect the wearer and maintain ritual purity.
The artisans here grind, polish, and string the beads by hand. You can find various sizes, from rough, rustic beads to perfectly round, polished ones. Some are carved with the name "Ram" on every bead.
It is the most common souvenir bought by pilgrims. Buying one here is considered auspicious.
